Itinerary Overview:
Embark on a 5 to 6-day trek along the historic Marangu Route, famously known as the “Coca-Cola” route. This journey takes you through a fascinating array of ecosystems, from the lush montane forests to the moorlands and the stark alpine desert, before reaching the icy summit. The Marangu Route offers the comfort of sleeping huts with shared facilities and usually involves a 5-day ascent; however, a 6th day is highly recommended for better acclimatization and summit success.
Day by Day Itinerary:
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
- Elevation: 1,860m to 2,705m
- Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
- Distance: 8 km
- Habitat: Rainforest
Your journey begins at the Marangu Gate, where you’ll complete the necessary paperwork before setting off. You’ll trek through dense rainforest, home to colobus monkeys and vibrant birdlife. The path is well-trodden and gentle, leading to Mandara Hut. Here, you can take an optional afternoon stroll to Maundi Crater for a first glimpse of the stunning vistas.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
- Elevation: 2,705m to 3,720m
- Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
- Distance: 11 km
- Habitat: Moorland
The second day’s hike moves through the moorland zone, where the forest gradually gives way to rolling alpine meadow. You’ll have a chance to admire giant heather and lobelias as you gain altitude. Keep an eye out for the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo as they come into view. Horombo Hut offers a more rugged landscape, and you’ll settle in while enjoying the surrounding scenery.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
- Optional Hike: Zebra Rocks, 4,020m
- Hiking Time: 2-3 hours (optional)
- Distance: 5 km (optional)
On this extra day, you’ll have the chance to acclimatize. Take a leisurely hike towards Zebra Rocks to see the unique striations. The rest of the day is for relaxation, ensuring you’re well-rested and acclimatized for the summit push.
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
- Elevation: 3,720m to 4,700m
- Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
- Distance: 10 km
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
As you ascend, the landscape shifts dramatically to the stark alpine desert. The hike to Kibo Hut is steady and slow, allowing your body to adjust to the thinning air. Rest at Kibo Hut, as you’ll need your energy for the midnight summit attempt.
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Summit to Horombo Hut
- Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m (summit) and down to 3,720m
- Hiking Time: 6-8 hours to summit; 5-6 hours to descend
- Distance: 6 km ascent, 15 km descent
- Habitat: Arctic
You’ll wake before midnight to begin your summit attempt. The climb is challenging, but the rising sun casting its light over the African plains will offer encouragement. Reaching Uhuru Peak, you’ll stand atop the highest point in Africa, a lifetime achievement. After savoring the moment, you’ll descend back to Kibo Hut, rest, and then continue down to Horombo Hut.
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
- Elevation: 3,720m to 1,860m
- Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
- Distance: 20 km
- Habitat: Rainforest
The final day is a descent through moorland to Mandara Hut, where a meal awaits. Then, you’ll continue down through the lush forest, spotting wildlife along the way. Celebrations await at the Marangu Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificates. Here, you’ll say farewell to your guides and porters before being transferred back to your hotel.
