Umbwe Route Kilimanjaro
Itinerary Overview:
The 7-day Umbwe Route Kilimanjaro is renowned for being the most direct and steepest route to the Southern Glaciers of Kilimanjaro and the summit. It is suitable for well-prepared and physically fit trekkers who are comfortable with a rapid ascent and who want a quieter, less-trodden path. This itinerary includes an extra acclimatization day at Barranco Camp, increasing the chances of a successful summit.
Day by Day Itinerary:
Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp
- Elevation: 1,600m to 2,850m
- Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
- Distance: 11 km
- Habitat: Rainforest
Begin at the Umbwe Gate where you will commence your climb through the dense rainforest. Expect a steep trail with a real sense of adventure as it is less maintained due to the route’s lower traffic. The sounds of the forest, mixed with the excitement of starting the trek, make for an exhilarating first day. Overnight is at the Umbwe Cave Camp, where you will rest amidst the thick forest canopy.
Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp
- Elevation: 2,850m to 3,950m
- Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
- Distance: 6 km
- Habitat: Heath
On the second day, you’ll continue ascending sharply out of the forest and into the heath zone where giant lobelias and senecios begin to appear. The path grows steeper and the air thinner. As you approach Barranco Camp, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Barranco Wall and the summit beckoning in the distance.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Barranco Camp
- Elevation: 3,950m
- Activities: Acclimatization walks
This day is dedicated to acclimatization. You will stay at Barranco Camp to allow your body to adjust to the altitude. Take short walks around the camp, enjoying the views of the Barranco Wall and the surrounding valleys. It’s crucial to keep hydrated and rest as much as possible.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
- Elevation: 3,950m to 3,995m
- Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
- Distance: 5 km
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today involves conquering the Barranco Wall – a steep but exhilarating climb. After reaching the top, the trail winds up and down valleys with splendid views, leading to Karanga Camp. This shorter day still allows for acclimatization and energy conservation for the following days.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
- Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m
- Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
- Distance: 4 km
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
Leaving Karanga, you’ll encounter a path that connects with the Mweka descent route. This stretch to Barafu Camp is short but steep, bringing you to a rocky and barren landscape. Upon arrival, prepare your equipment and rest early for the upcoming summit night.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp
- Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m (summit) and down to 3,100m
- Hiking Time: 6-8 hours to summit; 5-7 hours to descend
- Distance: 5 km ascent, 12 km descent
- Habitat: Arctic
Awaken around midnight to start the summit bid. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion, with slow and steady being the key to reaching the top. Stella Point on the crater rim is your first goal, followed by Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved rest.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
- Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m
- Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
- Distance: 10 km
- Habitat: Rainforest
Your final day on the mountain begins with a descent through the forest to Mweka Gate. The descent is often slippery but pleasantly shaded by the canopy. Once at the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate and have a chance to buy souvenirs before being driven back to your hotel where you can celebrate your accomplishment.
